Arcata Community Pool

The Arcata Community Pool, located next to Arcata High School in Humboldt County, is operated by the Arcata Parks and Recreation District.  The Pool offers numerous instructional and exercise options, including swim lessons, kayak instruction, lap swimming, water exercise programs, youth parties (with the option of the water slide), and lifeguard certification.  The facilities include a hot tub, sauna, and exercise room.
The District Board, which includes Janssen Malloy LLP partner Michael Morrison, meets monthly and invites public input at its meeting.

Helping the Less Fortunate Among Us

Legal Services of Northern California

Since 1956, Legal Services of Northern California (“LSNC”) has provided quality legal services with a mission to empower the poor to identify and defeat the causes and effects of poverty in their community.  Twenty-three of Northern California’s counties, including Humboldt, Del Norte, and Mendocino make up the LSNC service area, where the low income population exceeds 500,000.   LSNC provides free civil legal services to low-income individuals, families, and community-based organizations.

Auto Accident – Important Things to Remember

That automobile accidents are a fact of modern life is undisputed, yet most of us assume such things happen to others.   When a paralegal and lawyer from the Janssen Law Firm, while out serving papers in Eureka, California, were struck by a car darting out of an alley  it was a bit of a struggle to remember just what to do.

The obvious was easy– anybody hurt?  When the answer to that is “no” the police do not have time to investigate and you must be sure to get the pertinent information.   Following is a list of the type of  information you should obtain.

North Umpqua Foundation

The North Umpqua Foundation (TNUF) will hold a business meeting and its annual meeting October 23, 2010.  As usual, the meeting will take place in the library at The Steamboat Inn, 42705 North Umpqua Hwy, Idleyld Park, Oregon.   All members of TNUF are encouraged to attend.   Important agenda items will include updates on the Steamboat Falls fish passage project and the Legacy Rivers project with Pacific Rivers Council.   TNUF also has updated its website and all are encouraged to visit it at www.northumpqua.org.

Janssen Law Firm Announces Win

Michael Morrison and Amelia Burroughs of this Eureka, Humboldt County firm recently concluded the successful defense of a medical malpractice jury trial in Yreka, Siskiyou County, California.  The trial, presided over by the Honorable Karen Dixon, was very well run.  The court staff was quite helpful, and the jurors very attentive. The trial was a pleasant experience and demonstrated the civil jury experience at its best.
The Janssen Law Firm represents clients in litigation in all Northern California counties and Federal Courts.

Community Legal Information Center

The Community Legal Information Center (“CLIC”) at Chico State University celebrated its 40th anniversary on April 24, 2010.  The celebration included a tribute to and address by founder, leader, and inspiration Professor Edward J.  Bronson.  Professor Bronson reminded the assembled well-wishers and graduates of the program of the humble beginnings and impressive growth of the program at a fund-raising dinner held at the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in Chico.

The CLIC currently offers a wide variety of free legal information to students and community members as a student-run, non-profit organization with offices at 25 Main Street in Chico. The CLIC also provides paralegal internship opportunities for students who work directly under the supervision of staff attorneys.

The North Umpqua Foundation

The first 2010 meeting of The North Umpqua Foundation (“TNUF”) Board of Directors was held at the Steamboat Inn on March 21st.

The meeting was highlighted by the presentation by Michael Love of Michael Love and Associates of Eureka, California of its Design Recommendations for improving fish passage at Steamboat Falls.   Steamboat Creek is one of the most important spawning streams for the North Umpqua River.

Legal Services of Northern California

In 2009 Legal Services of Northern California (“LSNC”) celebrated its 53rd year of advocacy on behalf of low income folks in Northern California.   The program encompasses 23 counties, and provides a full range of legal services throughout that area, including from the Regional Office in Eureka, Humboldt County.   In addition to the services provided by the staff at the Eureka Regional Office, that office works with members of the local private Bar to provide, on a case by case basis, private attorney referrals, pro bono, for people meeting the legal services income eligibility requirements.
